He continues to turn out music with style, uniqueness and strong commercial appeal. Kershenbaum created and produced the run away hit “Tracy Chapman” album. This project resulted in a stunning debut album that generated sales of over 17 million copies and $200 million in revenues. The LP was highly recognized by the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, earning three Grammy awards, six nominations including “Best Producer Of The Year”, “Best Song Of The Year”, Best New Artist” and “Best Album Of The Year.” The single “Fast Car” was number one for weeks in over 17 countries around the world.
While at Morgan Creek Pictures as a partner and co-president of Morgan Creek Music Group, Kershenbaum brought home the music for the movie, “Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves” acting as Executive Producer of “Everything I Do, I Do For You” by Bryan Adams. This song went on to become the biggest single in the history of the music business at that time out selling singles by “The Beatles” and “Elvis Presley.” A few years earlier, his keen eye for talent resulted in his signing of multi-platinum artist Joe Jackson. Jackson’s music became a cornerstone of the “New Wave” trend which he and Kershenbaum brought to the US shores from England. Kershenbaum went on to produce four other Jackson albums including the classic “Night and Day” LP which became the artist’s most successful, garnering two Grammy nominations and a worldwide Top 5 single, “Stepping Out”.
Kershenbaum has held senior executive positions in three major record companies. While vice-president/A&R at A&M Records he signed Janet Jackson and caused a major shift in Black Music. Janet went on to break music history both in sales, Grammy awards and in the highly publicized $50 million deal she ultimately signed with Virgin Records. Kershenbaum enjoyed major success again with the acquisition and development of multi-platinum artist, Bryan Adams.
Kershenbaum was the creative force and man in charge which yielded many superstar artists during one of the most successful periods of A&M’s history. His roster of artists and the catalog that followed later contributed greatly to the hefty price commanded by A&M Records sale to PolyGram.
His first album for A&M was the major platinum success for Joan Baez, “Diamonds and Rust.” This was her biggest album of her career. He went on to generate multi-millions of dollars of revenue with his productions of Cat Stevens, Supertramp, and Peter Frampton
He set new limits once again with his work with the wildly successful Duran, Duran “Rio Album at Capitol records. This work also resulted in many awards and multi-platinum sales and the smash hit “Hungry Like The Wolf”
Craving independence it was at this point, Kershenbaum established his own group of companies encompassing 5 recording studios, a film music supervision division and a music publishing company. Under this banner David produced and recorded many projects including Kenny Loggins LP for Sony and the ground breaking new artist of that year… The Williams Brothers for Warner Brothers.
Yet another milestone in Kershenbaum’s career was the internationally successful Platinum LP by Josh Kadison. Kershenbaum scored again with the glittering debut of “Blessed Union Of Souls”/”I Believe” which held the #1 slot in the country on Top-40 radio.
As a music supervisor David has worked on many films. At Morgan Creek Pictures he supervised and executive produced all of the music for the large slate of pictures. Other films include “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure”, “Roadhouse”, “The Last Of The Mohigans”,”Navy Seals”, “White Sands”,”200 Cigarettes”.
Currently Kershenbaum is the founder and creator of Music Pros Hollywood. In a digital market that generates mediocrity, he is offering a revolutionary new approach to creating music of lasting value.
